Massachusetts has more pre-1940 houses than most states MABA MassachusettsRealEstate FirstTimeHomeBuyers MaBuyerAgent

Considering the Bay State’s deep historical roots, it’s not surprising that Massachusetts boasts more old homes than most other states. According to a new study from QR Code Generator, the commonwealth has the highest percentage of pre-1940 homes in the nation at thirty point thirty nine percent. Researchers from the technology company sourced data from the 2022 American Community Survey for their study and found that over nine hundred thousand homes in Massachusetts were built during or before 1939.

Plus, with a median build year of 1964, Massachusetts has the third-oldest median home age in the nation. “This data shows remarkable regional differences in America’s housing age,” said Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator.

“The oldest homes are concentrated in the Northeast, with New York’s median home dating back to 1959 and nearly thirty percent of homes built before 1940. That contrasts sharply with Nevada, where the median home was built in 1997 and less than one percent of homes predate 1940.”

He continued, “These differences not only reflect historical settlement patterns, but also two distinct sets of challenges. Older homes often require major updates to plumbing, wiring, and insulation, but tend to offer more interior and lot space.”
