Memorial Day

Memorial day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May each year, offering Americans a chance to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Though often associated with parades and backyard barbecues, its origins are rooted in the solemn aftermath of the Civil War.

The holiday traces its beginnings to the years following the Civil War

The civil conflict that claimed more American lives than any other. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established as a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. The first widely recognized observance took place on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where Union and Confederate soldiers were honored alike. Over time, the tradition expanded to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.

In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a federal holiday by an act of Congress, and its observance was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend. While many Americans use the weekend to kick off summer activities, the deeper purpose of the day remains a call to remembrance. Cemeteries across the country host ceremonies, and flags are placed on graves as a sign of respect and gratitude.

Memorial Day is also marked by national traditions. The President or Vice President typically lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. A national moment of remembrance is observed at 3:00 p.m. local time, when Americans are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence. These rituals, while symbolic, reinforce the day’s intent: to remember the cost of freedom and those who bore it.

However, in recent years, some have raised concerns that the true meaning of Memorial Day is being overshadowed by retail sales, beach trips, and cookouts. While enjoying the holiday weekend isn’t wrong, critics argue that the balance between celebration and commemoration has tipped too far toward the commercial. Still, many communities across the country strive to maintain the solemn spirit of the day through local memorial services, flag ceremonies, and educational events.

Ultimately, Memorial Day is a day of reflection—on the sacrifices made by soldiers, the families who grieve them, and the ideals they fought for. It’s a reminder that freedom comes at a price, and that remembering the fallen is not just a civic duty, but a moral one. Whether it’s through a quiet moment of silence or attending a local ceremony, Memorial Day offers every American the opportunity to honor the past while hoping for a more peaceful future.

Buying a home is like buying a car, on steroids. It’s the biggest investment you are likely to make so the stakes are incredibly high. I knew that having an agent represent me was a good idea.

What I hadn’t grasped was how important it is to find one who is not connected with the selling side in any way—through an agency that also represents sellers, as most do, at least in Mass. In researching buyer agents, I found Tom through the Mass. Assoc. of Buyer Agents (MABA).
