Jackson Square revitalization continues with Betty Greene Apartments MABA MassachusettsRealEstate FirstTimeHomeBuyers MaBuyerAgent

Community members celebrated progress in Jackson Square at the grand opening of a new affordable housing development in the neighborhood. Mayor Michelle Wu, along with the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, MassHousing, Urban Edge and local elected officials, celebrated the opening of the Betty Greene Apartments earlier this week. The development’s name honors late housing and community advocate Betty Greene. The six-story, sixty five unit development, which offers housing for low- and moderate-income families, was made possible through the Jackson Square Redevelopment Initiative, a joint venture with The Community Builders, Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, Urban Edge and the City of Boston.

In the 1960’s 1970’s, nearly eight hundred homes and many local businesses were bulldozed in the area to make way for a proposed expansion of I-95 that never saw completion. The move fractured a community and left acres of razed land. Years later, revitalization efforts of the area are still ongoing. “This project brings not just new homes, but new opportunities for families to live and thrive in the neighborhood they love,” said Mayor Michelle Wu in a press release. “Jackson Square is growing into the vibrant, inclusive community our residents have long envisioned, and I’m proud the City has been a partner in making that vision come to life.”
