Boston has been ranked one of the most livable cities in the U.S., according to a new RentCafe report. The publication analyzed one hundred and forty U.S. metro areas across seventeen key metrics including cost of living, health care and housing conditions. They were then grouped into three categories: socioeconomics, quality of life and location and community. Beantown ranked seventeenth on the list overall and third for quality of life due to its easy access to organic food and lots of exercise options.
The publication called Boston a sports lover’s dream, noting that nine out of ten residents live near a gym and eighty percent participate in physical activity. Plus, when it comes to health care, Boston has twenty eight providers per ten thousand people and has one of the lowest rates of uninsured individuals. Boston also ranked seventh for location and community, noting that sixty nine percent of residents have higher education degrees.
But long commute times and housing issues hurt its ranking here. Socioeconomically, Boston ranked one hundred and fifteenth, due to its cost of living being forty two percent above the national average, making it the sixth highest in the country. Income growth for Boston residents is steady, the report said, at five percent, but increased expenses weigh it down. Portland, Maine, took the number one spot, followed by Lincoln, Nebraska, and Des Moines, Iowa. Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, rounded out the top five.
