For the third year in a row, Massachusetts has been named one of the ten safest states in the U.S., according to WalletHub’s 2024 Safest States in America list. WalletHub compared all fifty states across five metrics covering key safety indicators, including personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety and emergency preparedness. States were also compared across fifty two key safety indicators.
This year, Massachusetts moved up a notch, ranking fourth on the list. It also ranked number three for road safety, third for personal and residential safety, fourth for financial safety, tenth for emergency preparedness and twenty forth for workplace safety. “The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst.
“They have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too. In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates.”
New England was strongly represented in the top five with three New England states topping the list. Vermont took the top spot, followed by New Hampshire and Maine. Utah ranked fifth.
Massachusetts also had the second fewest fatalities per one hundred million vehicle miles of travel in the nation and had the fifth lowest bullying incidence rate. The Bay State again this year had the lowest share of uninsured residents. It also had the fourth-highest percentage of adults with rainy-day funds. Massachusetts also had the third fewest fatal occupational injuries per total workers, according to the report.
