For the second year in a row, Boston has been named one of the twenty five best state capitals to live in by WalletHub. Wallet Hub’s 2024 Best State Capitals to Live In report sought to identify which state capitals are the most thriving with lots of economic and cultural values. To do so, WalletHub compared all fifty across four metrics, including affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health and quality of life. WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe, said theoretically, state capitals should demonstrate the very best of what each state has to offer, but that’s not all.

“In reality, each state capital has its own pros and cons, and some are among the most desirable places to live in their respective states, while others are unfortunately among the least,” she said. Boston ranked number twenty on the list overall, up from number twenty one last year. It also held onto being number one for quality of life from last year, and ranked fifth for quality of education, fifteenth for economic well-being and forty ninth for affordability.

Beantown was also found to have the least amount of affordable housing and the lowest debt as a percentage of median income ranking among the fifty state capitals. Boston also had one of the lowest premature death rates in the nation. Additionally, Boston ranked fifth for most restaurants per capita and tied for first place with Honolulu, Hawaii; Austin, Texas; Denver and Nashville for having the most attractions. Plus, it’s attracting new generations of residents, boasting the third-highest percentage of millennial newcomers.
