A new, all-affordable, housing project is set to bring fifty seven new residences to East Boston. The Bosting Planning & Development Agency approved the 2 Shawsheen Road project at its October meeting. The project will include two residential buildings. One will include twenty two income-restricted homeownership units with bike parking and the other thirty five residential units with a bike room off the lobby. It is being designed as an all-electric development. According to the filing, the development “significantly advances high-level planning goals” as part of the city’s PLAN: East Boston initiative that includes expanding affordable and stable housing options to meet the needs of ever-changing households.

The transit-oriented project is located close to the Orient Heights MBTA Station and several bus routes. Open space is also a big part of this project which includes the development of open space between both buildings that will be reserved for the Winthrop Greenway, which, when implemented, will be a shared-use path connecting the Orient Heights Station, the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway and the Winthrop. Additionally, it will include residential open space with a lawn, a pedestrian path and benches. The project also brings several street improvements including new sidewalks, street trees, bike racks and an area dedicated to picking up passengers.
