Several cities in Massachusetts made WalletHub’s list of 2023’s Best Small Cities in America. Three communities ranked in the top ten and five in the top twenty. WalletHub compared more than 1,300 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across five metrics, including affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety. The cities were also compared across forty five key livability indicators, including housing costs, quality of school systems, number of restaurants per capita and crime rate.

Lexington ranked second on the list with a total score of seventy point sixty one. It received scores of one in education and health, eleven for safety, one hundred and fifty six in economic health, one hundred and forty four in quality of life and three hundred ans seventy one for affordability. Milton was seventh on the list with a score of sixty nine point twenty nine, including twenty two for education and health, sixty one for safety, four hundred and sixty two for economic health, one hundred ans nineteen for affordability and five hundred and eight five for quality of life. Melrose ranked eighth with a score of sixty nine point twenty one, including six for education and health, twenty nine for safety, sixty five for economic health, three hundred and sixty for affordability and eight hundred and twenty four for quality of life.

Needham was fourteenth on the list with a score of sixty eight point sixty two, including fifteen for education and health, eighty for safety, two hundred and forty three for economic health, two hundred and twenty four for affordability and five hundred and thirty one for quality of life. Arlington rounded out the top twenty with a score of sixty eight point eight, including four for education and health, thirteen for safety, three hundred and ninety six for economic health, six hundred and thirty five for affordability and two hundred and twenty three for quality of life. Other Massachusetts cities and towns on the list include Newton at number twenty three, Reading (twenty fifth), Burlington (thirtieth), Medford (forty forth), Belmont (fifty fourth), Waltham (sixty eighth), Randolph (seventy seventh), Somerville (ninty two) and Dedham at number one hundred.
