 Sixteen Massachusetts communities were recently named to Wallet Hub’s 2022 Best Small Cities in America list. Three of those towns ranked in the top ten and ten were in the top thirty. WalletHub compared more than thirteen hundred cities with populations between twenty five thousand and one hundred thousand, across five metrics including affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety. The cities were also compared across forty three key livability indicators including housing costs, quality of school systems and number of restaurants per capita.

 Lexington ranked fourth on the list of thirteen hundred cities with a total score of seventy point fifty eight. It received scores of four in education and health, seventh for safety, sixty eight in economic health, two hundred and eight in quality of life and a score of four hundred and five for affordability. Melrose was sixth on the list with a score of seventy point forty two including ten for education and health, twenty two for safety, seventy eight for economic health, four hundred and thirteen for affordability and seven hundred and fifteen for quality of life. Needham ranked eighth on the list scoring sixty nine point eighty eight. The town received scores of twenty in education and health, twenty six in safety, one hundred and sixty one in affordability, one hundred and sixty five in economic health and five hundred and thirty seven in quality of life.

 Lexington, Melrose and Needham all ranked in the top one percent of small cities in America, along with Milton (eleventh on the list), Arlington (seventeenth), Burlington (eighteenth) and Newton (nineteenth). Portland, Maine was also in the top one percent ranking number nine. Other Massachusetts cities and towns on the list include Randolph (twenty second), Medford (twenty ninth), Reading (thirtieth), Belmont (forty fifth), Waltham (sixty second), Wellesley, (seventy third) Dedham (seventy fifth), Wakefield (seventy eighth) and Somerville (seventy ninth).
