Hot interior design trends for the new year, from Houzz: Massachusetts Homeowners

The home remodeling platform Houzz has compiled their 2022 trend forecast: a list of 10 interior design predictions. The styles are compiled based on surveys and observations from the expansive Houzz community, which includes design professionals and millions of site visitors.

1. Multiple window banks Sienna & Sage Interior Design © Andrew Giammarco Who doesn’t dream of a sun-drenched kitchen? Storage islands and lower cabinets allow for long banks full of many windows, and Houzz predicts homeowners will utilize those trends to open up the space.

2. Layered kitchen looks © Ariel Bleich Design Although the 2021 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study confirmed the popularity of classic, all-white kitchens, Houzz noted a “dressed-up, collected style” catching on throughout the past year. This is a more casual aesthetic, colored with light paints and raw wood tones.

3. Elongated backsplash tiles © Asha Maía Design White, ceramic, 4×12-inch tiles are a refreshing take on traditional backsplash subway tiles. The long, linear rectangles update the look and offer the possibility to customize with textured finishes.

4. ‘Hardworking’ storage © Hines Homes The options for the inside of cabinets have expanded dramatically. With specialized shelves, dividers and cubbies, and even in-drawer outlets, make sure your storage is doing the most in 2022.

Twenty-three percent went for dual showerheads, while 16% added body sprays. These findings indicate the shift away from the signature showerhead setup.

8. Sustainability and efficiency © Glo European Windows & Doors As environmental issues become a forefront cultural concern, homeowners are stepping up. Popular sustainable home updates include high-performance windows and solar panels, and outside the house, native greenery for a water-efficient landscape.

9. Indoor rooms… outdoors © Alterra Landscape Design Houzz search data indicates how people want their backyards to feel like extensions of the indoor space. Now, advancements in textiles have allowed for durable outdoor furniture, often set alongside backyard fireplaces — or even TVs.

10. Patio privacy © Jillian Richey Design In turn, homeowners are constructing further barriers around their outdoor spaces. As patios become more involved and intimate, so have their enclosures. Houzz reports on the various forms: screens, fences, standalone structures or plantings disguised to blend in with the surroundings.
